The main fuse protects the power cable if it becomes damaged or shorts to the vehicle. Without proper circuit protection, the cable could overheat and create a fire risk. The fuse primarily protects the wiring—not just the amplifier.
Begin with the amplifier manufacturer’s recommended fuse rating. The main fuse must also remain within the safe current capacity of the power cable. For multiple amplifiers, consider the combined system requirements while making sure the fuse never exceeds what the main cable can safely support.
Install the main fuse holder on the positive power cable as close to the battery as practical—generally within 18 inches. Mount it securely in a protected, accessible location where the cable cannot rub against sharp metal or moving components.
The holder must match the physical fuse type, accommodate your power-cable size and safely support the required current. Check the holder’s specifications before combining it with an ANL, mini-ANL or other fuse style.
A distribution block splits one main power cable into multiple outputs, making it useful when powering more than one amplifier or accessory. Choose a block that accepts your main cable size and provides the correct number and size of outputs for your equipment.
A fused distribution block provides individual protection for each outgoing power cable and is usually the better choice when the branches use smaller wire. An unfused block only divides the connection, so each outgoing circuit may still require appropriate protection elsewhere.
